Summer Student Development Assistant 

Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math & Science


1- or 6-week part-time positions:

  • 1 Week – June 11th to June 15th
  • 6 Weeks – June 11th to July 20th

Location: Hill College in Hillsboro, TX


Compensation Range: $12 - $15 per hour (based on education & experience)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • An associate’s degree or a minimum of two years of experience in providing teaching or tutoring;

  • Demonstrated academic excellence (high GPA);

  • Direct experience working with youth from disadvantaged backgrounds;

  • Academic support services for students from multicultural and low income communities;

  • Personal experience overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project’s target population.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • One year of college experience with other work experience or education as additional qualifiers;

  • Positive self-starting attitude;

  • Patience and a strong desire to help students achieve their goals;

  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve.

Duties and Responsibilities: Generally, SDCs are responsible for chaperoning students while on campus and field trips, providing guidance regarding college and career options, supporting program activities by setting up equipment, cleaning after events, and assisting with program development. Related activities, services, and duties include:


  • Providing support, advice, and tutorial help for students ensuring their academic development and success in their summer classes.
  • Being aware of program activities & field trips (purposes, dates, etc.).
  • Chaperoning students while at Hill College and on field trips.
  • Establishing positive mentoring relationships with students and addressing character issues that affect their ability or will affect their ability to succeed in high school, college, and beyond.
  • Addressing issues related to college readiness, including topics such as navigation of the college system, the application process, financial aid, study habits, common college pitfalls, SAT/ACT preparation, etc.
  • Attending meetings & training's and submitting required paperwork on time.
  • Assisting with ad hoc projects as needed.

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs., to stand and walk for long periods of time, to endure strong heat and cold, to climb stairs and to fly on airplane. Must be able to project voice and speak publicly. Must be able to drive a vehicle, read road signs, judge distance, & spend extensive hours in front of a computer screen. Must be able to listen carefully to others on the telephone.
