Both of ORS' Classic Upward Bound programs and two Upward Bound Math and Science programs identify and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The UB & UBMS projects will each serve 260 first-generation and/or low-income high school students in Johnson County each year.


Services provided by the program include:

  • Academic, financial, career, or personal counseling including advice on entry or re-entry to secondary or postsecondary programs 
  • Tutorial services 
  • Information on postsecondary education 
  • Exposure to college campuses
  • Social and cultural enrichment
  • Information on student financial assistance 
  • Assistance in completing college admissions and financial aid applications 
  • Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams 
  • Workshops for the families of participants
  • Summer enrichment focusing on math, laboratory science, composition, literature, and foreign language.
  • UB is 100% federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education for a period of five years
