The Classic Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math and Science programs identify and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The UB & UBMS projects will each serve 70 first-generation and/or low-income high school students in Johnson County.


Services provided by the program include:

  • Academic, financial, career, or personal counseling including advice on entry or re-entry to secondary or postsecondary programs 
  • Tutorial services 
  • Information on postsecondary education 
  • Exposure to college campuses
  • Social and cultural enrichment
  • Information on student financial assistance 
  • Assistance in completing college admissions and financial aid applications 
  • Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams 
  • Workshops for the families of participants
  • Summer enrichment focusing on math, laboratory science, composition, literature, and foreign language.
  • UB is 100% federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education for a period of five years
